WestPac' and the AirLogo Program : America enters the era of flying billboards
Including 13 billboard logojets and 3 season liveries |
Starting operations on 28 April 1995 from the underserved airport of Colorado Springs, Western Pacific immediately stood out from the crowd: its AirLogo Program made the exterior of every 737 of the airline offered as advertising space, and the first revenue flight of the airline was flown by its very first logojet. The Broadmoor hotel in Colorado Springs was the first third-party to sign an agreement with WestPac for a logoJet. Other local resorts and casinos implanted at some of the airline's destinations soon followed suit.
The airline's most widely known logojet quickly became The Simpsons' 737, the result of a $1 million contract with FOX TV channel to advertise the animated sitcom. Despite these contracts the airline didn't manage to be profitable in its early years and losses quickly built up. In early 1998 after a controversial move to Denver Intl Airport and a failed attempt to merge with Frontier Airlines, Western Pacific had to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and the airline was liquidated, leaving a colourful legacy to spotters.
